Who We Are

The Egyptian House of Zakat and Charity is an independent entity established by Presidential Decree Law No. (123) of 2014. It is supervised by His Eminence the Grand Imam, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, who chairs its Board of Trustees — comprised of religious figures and public personalities with diverse expertise. The House collects Zakat, charitable donations, grants, bequests, endowments, and subsidies on a voluntary basis, and disburses them according to Islamic law.

"There is a very wide base of people who suffer from poverty, misery and deprivation. I often thought: if the Zakat obligation were fulfilled as it should be, within its Islamic framework, Zakat and charity could alleviate the pain, sorrow and suffering of the poor."

His Eminence the Grand Imam — Professor Dr.

Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed El-Tayeb

Our Goals

  • Raising awareness about the Zakat obligation and its role in community development, and spreading the spirit of mutual care and compassion among society members.
  • Collecting Zakat funds, charitable donations, grants, bequests, endowments and directing them to their legally prescribed channels.
  • Developing and disbursing charitable funds, donations, grants, bequests, endowments, and social subsidies in accordance with the Quranic verse:
{Indeed, [prescribed] charitable offerings are only [to be given] to the poor and the indigent, and to those who work on [administering] it, and to those whose hearts are to be reconciled, and to [free] those in bondage, and to the debt-ridden, and for the cause of God, and to the wayfarer. [This is] an obligation from God. And God is all-knowing, all-wise.} [Al-Tawbah: 60]
